AMERICA'S GREAT OUTDOORS

"The Sheep are Baaaack at Fort Ord National Monument" (News.bytes Extra)
The wooly weedeaters are back at Fort Ord National Monument. The sheep
have grazed the grasslands of Fort Ord long before the Bureau of Land
Management began managing the land, said BLM Interpretive Specialist
Tammy Jakl. The sheep spend the winters in Los Banos and arrive at the
Fort Ord National Monument in February. They stay until the grass no
longer provides them with nutrients, usually around July.

"International Seismology Team Studies Ancient Chemehuevi Mountains
Faults" (News.bytes Extra)
Seven geology sleuths were spotted last week in California's
Chemehuevi Mountains Wilderness. According to their leader, Dr.
Barbara John of the University of Wyoming, they're looking for clues
in this remote Mojave Desert mountain range to better understand how
earthquakes work. "By studying ancient, inactive faults that have
'surfaced' through weathering and geologic uplifting over millions of
years, we have a window on what is probably occurring miles
underground with active faults like the San Andreas," explained Dr.
John.

"Cheatgrass Fight Gains New Hope" (Western Farm Press, 4/4/13)
A strain of naturally occurring soil bacteria tested on national
wildlife refuges and other Western lands may soon offer rangeland
managers a safe new way to manage cheatgrass, an aggressive plant
pest. In the Great Basin states of Nevada, Utah, Oregon and
California, cheatgrass is spreading at the rate of thousands of acres
per day, endangering many more animal species and habitats. In
addition to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, government agencies
expressing interest in the natural cheatgrass inhibitor include the
National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land
Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

Razo, Bureau of Land Management spokesperson. "The weather has a lot
to do with the amount of visitors we receive," Razo said. "You won't
see too many people riding around in the dead of summer."
